Matiang'i's Presidential Bid in Trouble as Kalonzo, Sifuna Emerge as Opposition's Top Choice

Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang'i's quest to become the opposition's presidential flag bearer in the 2027 General Election is facing fresh uncertainty after influential leaders reportedly shifted their attention to a Kalonzo Musyoka-Edwin Sifuna ticket.

According to The Star on Thursday, July 23, senior figures involved in opposition unity talks are increasingly backing Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka for president with Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as his running mate.

Sources familiar with the discussions told The Star newspaper that the duo is now seen as the strongest team to challenge President William Ruto in 2027.

The reported shift comes despite Matiang'i having emerged over the past several months as one of the leading opposition figures.

Since declaring his interest in the presidency under the Jubilee Party, the former Interior Cabinet Secretary has held consultations with several opposition leaders, including Kalonzo, as efforts continue to build a united front against President Ruto.

Matiang'i is also among several prominent politicians seeking to lead the opposition coalition.

Others who have publicly shown interest in the presidency include Kalonzo Musyoka, Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, former Chief Justice David Maraga, Martha Karua, Eugene Wamalwa, and Busia Senator Okiya Omtatah.

The latest political calculations closely mirror findings released by Infotrak earlier this month.

The survey showed President William Ruto leading the overall presidential race with 32 per cent, followed by Kalonzo Musyoka at 13 per cent. Sifuna and Matiang'i were tied in third place with 12 per cent each, while Gachagua polled 4 per cent.

The findings suggested that no candidate would secure the constitutional threshold required for a first-round victory if an election were held now.

Among opposition supporters alone, however, Kalonzo narrowly edged Matiang'i in the race for the coalition's presidential ticket. Kalonzo attracted 27 per cent support, Matiang'i followed closely with 26 per cent, while Sifuna received 19 per cent and Gachagua 9 per cent.

The same Infotrak poll ranked possible opposition pairings, placing a Kalonzo-Sifuna ticket first with 23 per cent support.

A Kalonzo-Matiang'i combination came second with 16 per cent, while a Matiang'i-Kalonzo ticket followed at 15 per cent. Other combinations involving Gachagua attracted significantly lower support.

Although no final decision has been made on the opposition's 2027 ticket, The Star reports that the growing preference for a Kalonzo-Sifuna combination could complicate Matiang'i's path to securing the coalition's presidential endorsement.

With slightly more than a year before the General Election campaigns gather momentum, negotiations among opposition leaders are expected to continue as they seek a formula capable of mounting a united challenge against President Ruto.
