Political Earthquake Looms as Rigathi Asks Sifuna to Drop His Presidential Ambitions and Support Him

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has stepped up calls for opposition unity ahead of the 2027 General Election, urging Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna to shelve any presidential ambitions and instead support his bid for the country's top seat. 

Gachagua argued that presenting a single opposition candidate would significantly increase the chances of defeating President William Ruto in the next election.

Speaking during a political gathering, Gachagua said the opposition should avoid internal rivalry and instead focus on building a strong and united coalition capable of mounting a formidable challenge against the Kenya Kwanza administration. 

He stressed that identifying one presidential flagbearer early would allow the coalition to consolidate its support, strengthen its campaign structures and avoid divisions that could weaken its chances at the ballot.

The former Deputy President also appealed to other opposition leaders to place the country's interests above personal political ambitions. 

He warned that prolonged competition for the coalition's presidential ticket could create unnecessary divisions among supporters and undermine efforts to build a united front before campaigns officially begin.

Gachagua expressed confidence that he possesses the experience, leadership credentials and nationwide appeal needed to lead the opposition into the 2027 presidential race. 

He urged coalition partners to assess potential candidates based on their ability to attract support across different regions of the country rather than individual political interests or party affiliations.

His remarks come as discussions over a possible grand opposition alliance continue to gather momentum. 

Several prominent leaders, including Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka and People's Liberation Party leader Martha Karua, have all been mentioned as potential presidential contenders, with consultations ongoing on the best strategy to challenge President Ruto.

Gachagua's latest appeal is expected to spark renewed debate within opposition circles as leaders negotiate the structure of a united coalition. 

Whether Sifuna and other key figures agree to rally behind a single candidate or pursue their individual ambitions is likely to play a decisive role in shaping the opposition's strategy and prospects ahead of the closely watched 2027 General Election.
