Some Religious Leaders Convinced Kenyans That Ruto Was Chosen By God - Natembeya Raise Concern

Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya has reignited debate over the role of religious leaders in Kenya's politics after arguing that the church cannot remain silent when citizens are facing challenges.

Natembeya said churches have a responsibility to speak on matters affecting ordinary Kenyans rather than distancing themselves from political discussions.

According to him, faith leaders played a significant role during the 2022 General Election and were actively involved in shaping public opinion.

The governor claimed that some religious leaders openly backed President William Ruto's presidential bid and persuaded many believers that his leadership was part of a divine plan.

Because of that involvement, Natembeya argued that the church cannot now step aside when citizens raise concerns about governance, the economy and public welfare.

He maintained that religious institutions should stand with the people whenever they feel neglected or burdened by government policies.

Natembeya stressed that churches have historically been influential voices in defending justice and accountability.

His remarks have sparked fresh discussion among Kenyans, with supporters agreeing that the church should remain vocal on national issues, while critics insist religious institutions should avoid direct involvement in political affairs.

The comments are expected to fuel ongoing conversations about the relationship between faith and leadership in the country.
