Ex-Ruto Ally Clears the Air on Why Mt Kenya Leaders Are Backing the President, Exposes Hidden Agenda

yNaivasha MP Jane Kihara has stirred political debate after alleging that a section of Mount Kenya leaders supporting President William Ruto are driven by personal financial interests rather than genuine political loyalty.

Speaking during an interview on Kameme TV on Thursday, May 21, 2026, Kihara claimed that some leaders publicly defending the President are doing so to access government-linked business opportunities and tenders.

“Leaders, especially from the mountain, who say that Ruto is a good person and should be re-elected, are in that camp because of what they are eating and the businesses and tenders from the government,” she said.

According to the outspoken legislator, the support being witnessed in parts of Mount Kenya is closely tied to access to state resources, which she claims is being used to strengthen personal political influence ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Kihara argued that a section of politicians has strategically aligned themselves with the Kenya Kwanza administration in order to secure financial backing and political advantage as the country heads toward the next election cycle.

She further alleged that some leaders are focused on building war chests early, using their proximity to government to position themselves strongly for 2027 contests.

The MP maintained that the trend reflects a growing shift where political loyalty is increasingly influenced by economic gain rather than service delivery or ideological alignment.

Her remarks come at a time when Mount Kenya politics is becoming more fractured, with leaders split between supporting President Ruto and former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

The region, considered a key voting bloc, has recently witnessed intensified political realignments as competing factions seek to consolidate influence ahead of the polls.

The emerging divisions have added new tension to the national political landscape, with Mount Kenya once again taking centre stage in the battle for control of Kenya’s electoral direction ahead of 2027.
