With the once-powerful Azimio la Umoja coalition appearing increasingly weakened, many political observers believe that Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka is positioning himself as the main challenger to President William Ruto in the 2027 General Election.
If he enters the race, it will mark two decades since his first presidential bid in 2007, when he finished third behind former President Mwai Kibaki and ODM leader Raila Odinga.
With Raila gradually stepping back from frontline politics after decades of influence, Kalonzo has increasingly emerged as a leading opposition figure.
This shift follows the political cooperation between President Ruto and Raila, which saw several ODM leaders appointed to the Cabinet. The development has fueled efforts to reorganize the Azimio coalition and potentially remove Raila from its leadership structure.
Should those plans materialize, Kalonzo would be well placed to take charge of a restructured opposition alliance heading into the 2027 presidential race.
However, political analysts argue that his choice of running mate could be a decisive factor in determining his chances of unseating Ruto.
Many believe that a ticket pairing Kalonzo with former Defence Cabinet Secretary Eugene Wamalwa could present a formidable challenge.
Wamalwa has built a reputation as a skilled political strategist and influential leader, particularly in the Western region, despite competing for political influence with figures such as Moses Wetangula and Musalia Mudavadi.
Supporters of such an alliance argue that a Kalonzo–Wamalwa ticket could significantly strengthen the opposition's prospects in 2027 and potentially mount a serious challenge to Ruto's bid for a second term, provided they successfully unite key voting blocs and execute an effective campaign strategy.
