According to investigators, taxi driver Josiah Njeru Njiru is currently the prime suspect in the ongoing investigation.
Detectives say he was the last known person to communicate with Wandeto on the night she was attacked in Mwiki, Kasarani.
Court documents presented before the Makadara Law Courts indicate that the gospel singer allegedly left her house at around 9:00 p.m. on May 15, 2026, after receiving a call believed to have come from the suspect.
A few hours later, she was found with severe burn injuries and rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital in critical condition.
Despite efforts by medical personnel to save her life, Wandeto succumbed to her injuries on May 18 while undergoing treatment. Investigators revealed that more than 70 percent of her body had sustained burns, highlighting the horrifying nature of the attack.
The DCI further informed the court that preliminary findings placed the suspect near the victim’s residence on the night of the incident, despite the fact that he reportedly does not live within the area.
Detectives believe this development could play a key role in piecing together the events leading to the attack.
Authorities are now seeking permission to detain Njiru for 21 more days to allow investigators to complete crucial parts of the inquiry.
These include collecting CCTV footage, recording witness statements, carrying out forensic analysis, conducting DNA testing, and organizing an identification parade.
Investigators also requested that the suspect remain in custody at Kilimani Police Station or another secure facility, arguing that the matter has attracted widespread public attention and concern.
Detectives warned that releasing him at this stage could interfere with investigations or increase the risk of him fleeing before the case is concluded.
